Sudden pain can be alarming. Whether it starts after lifting, waking up stiff, or following an unexpected movement, acute musculoskeletal pain often leaves people unsure where to turn or what to expect next. Many patients seek an emergency chiropractic visit because the pain is intense, limiting movement, or interfering with daily tasks.
This fact sheet explains what typically happens during an emergency chiropractic appointment and how care is approached when someone presents in significant discomfort. In this article, Dr Simon Nash (Chiropractor) explains how emergency presentations are assessed, when referral is required, and how treatment is tailored to reduce pain safely and efficiently.

What is an emergency chiropractic visit?
An emergency chiropractic visit is designed for people experiencing acute pain that requires prompt assessment and care. This may include sudden back pain, neck pain, restricted movement, nerve-related symptoms, or pain that feels severe or unfamiliar.
“What can you expect from your emergency chiropractic visit?” Dr Nash (Chiropractor) asks.
“Obviously you’ve come to see us in a fair amount of pain.”
The primary goal of the visit is to determine whether the condition is safe to treat, identify the source of pain, and begin appropriate care to reduce symptoms as quickly as possible.
Initial assessment and safety screening
Safety is always the first priority during an emergency presentation. Chiropractors are trained to recognise red flags that may indicate the need for urgent medical referral.
“If we needed to refer you to A&E or any medical care, we would do that immediately,” Dr Nash explains.
During the initial stage of the visit, the chiropractor will:
- Take a focused history of symptoms
- Ask how and when the pain started
- Identify any warning signs requiring medical referral
This screening step ensures that conditions such as fractures, infections, or serious neurological issues are not missed.
“If that’s been done and you’re okay to treat, we would then assess what’s happening.”
Understanding where the pain is coming from
Once it is confirmed that chiropractic care is appropriate, the next step is a targeted physical assessment. Acute pain can originate from joints, muscles, discs, ligaments, or nerves, and identifying the source guides treatment decisions.
“So we would then assess what’s happening, where it is in the body, and how it’s happened,” says Dr Nash.
Assessment may include:
- Orthopaedic testing to reproduce or relieve symptoms
- Neurological testing to assess nerve function
- Movement and posture evaluation
“We would run through usually some orthopaedic testing, some neuro testing or neurological testing and make sure that we know what we’re dealing with.”
This process helps distinguish between different causes of pain, such as joint restriction, muscle spasm, or nerve irritation.
Treatment during an emergency visit
Emergency chiropractic treatment focuses on pain reduction rather than long-term correction during the initial visit. Care is adapted to the patient’s tolerance and presentation.
“Typically when patients are in pain or require an emergency visit, we would try and reduce that pain,” Dr Nash explains.
Treatment may include:
- Gentle joint mobilisation
- Simple, pain-free movement strategies
- Light stretching where appropriate
- Advice on positioning and activity modification at home
“Our aim is to reduce your pain and get you out of pain as quickly as we can.”
Forceful techniques are not always necessary or appropriate during acute episodes. Research published in The Spine Journal supports the use of conservative, graded manual therapy approaches for acute low back pain to reduce symptoms and improve mobility in the short term.
Relevant services at Our Chiro Brisbane include:
- Emergency chiropractic care
- Chiropractic care, including manual adjustment or muscle release and soft tissue techniques
Pain relief and recovery timelines
One of the most common questions patients ask during an emergency visit is how long recovery will take. The answer depends on the underlying cause, tissue involvement, and individual response to care.
“Depending on what the cause, why it’s there, sometimes it can be a really simple thing and you can be out of pain within 24 hours,” says Dr Nash.
“Sometimes it will take a little bit longer, but our goal is to get you pain free and moving as quickly as possible.”
Acute pain often responds well to early intervention. Evidence from The Lancet (Foster et al. 2018) suggests that timely, appropriate care for acute musculoskeletal pain can reduce the risk of symptoms becoming persistent.
Importantly, improvement does not always mean complete resolution in one visit. Follow-up care may be recommended to support healing and reduce recurrence risk.

Frequently asked questions
Question: What conditions qualify as an emergency chiropractic visit?
Sudden back pain, neck pain, acute joint restriction, muscle spasm, or nerve symptoms may warrant urgent assessment.
Question: Will I be adjusted during an emergency visit?
Not always. Treatment is based on what is safe and appropriate for your condition on the day.
Question: What if my pain is not suitable for chiropractic care?
You will be referred to medical care immediately if needed.
Question: How long does an emergency appointment take?
Appointments typically allow time for assessment, treatment, and advice, usually within a standard consultation length.
Question: Can emergency chiropractic care help avoid hospital visits?
In some musculoskeletal cases, early conservative care may reduce symptom severity, though referral is always made when required.
Question: Should I rest completely after my visit?
Complete rest is rarely recommended. You will be given guidance tailored to your condition.
