What does a chiropractor do?

Chiropractic focuses on the connection between the structure of the body and the function of the body, and how these functions work together to preserve and restore health.

Put simply, we deal with the relationship between the nerves, joints, muscles and bones of your body.

Through our knowledge and training of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems, we aim to correct bio-mechanical dysfunction of the spine, joints and nerves so that the body can function at an optimum level and free of pain.

We do this effectively, naturally and gently using different techniques without the use of surgery or drugs.

How are Chiropractors educated?

Our Chiropractors have studied for 5 years at Macquarie University, Sydney obtaining 2 degrees in Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies:

  • Bachelor of Chiropractic Science, B.Chiro.Sc
  • Master of Chiropractic, M.Chiro
  • 1 year Clinical Internship.

We are trained in the area of the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.

Why do people see our chiropractors

We are experienced in the treatment of a number of conditions such as:

  • Back pain
  • Sciatica and disc problems
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Poor posture and Scoliosis
  • Sporting injuries of the shoulder, knees, ankles and hips
  • Work related stress injury such as Carpal tunnel, Tennis elbow
  • Muscular pains and stiffness
  • Nerve injury, numbness and tingling
  • Osteoarthritis and post-surgery rehabilitation

  • Shin splints and plantar fasciitis

As primary health care professionals many patients come to us for a second opinion and to discuss their options or prognosis of their condition.

Can chiropractic help me?

The initial consultation involves full medical history and physical examination to determine the cause of the problem. X-rays and further studies may be ordered if necessary, however this is on a case by case basis. Correct diagnosis and identification of any contributing factors or biomechanical dysfunction is essential.

We find that we are able to achieve a high success rate in terms of reducing pain and correcting biomechanical problems in both the short and the long term. Many patients that come to see us for their medical problem have been around the mill many times and have not thought to see a chiropractor.

We often hear patients say “If I’d known about chiropractic I would have come to you years ago” instead of repeatedly having physiotherapy or massages which seems to only give temporarily relief. Physiotherapy and massage certainly works, however if the root cause of your pain is due to a joint, muscle therapy will only treat the symptoms and not the cause. On the contrary chiropractic treatment will address this directly.

Some of the most common chronic problems that we treat successfully are neck pain, back pain and headaches or migraines.

As primary health care providers we will refer you to other specialists or GP if your condition is not within our specialty. We work closely with other health professionals such as medical doctors, physios, podiatrists, dentists and others to ensure that you get the best possible care and result.

Does chiropractic hurt?

Some people are apprehensive about seeking chiropractic treatment because they think that it is going to hurt or they have heard stories about people getting their “bones cracked”. Chiropractic treatment does not have to involve any clicking or cracking at all! Although we all like to tell a good fear inducing story, chiropractic treatment is very safe and can be as gentle as you would like.

What this “cracking of the bones” is referring to, is the audible (click) produced from the synovial joint fluid as gas bubbles are released in response to movement of a joint. This phenomenon is quite natural; it is not painful and may often occur spontaneously during normal life as well.

We work using gentle joint adjusting techniques and soft tissue muscle releases. We believe and encourage patients to take an active role in the treatment they receive and we appreciate any feedback or preferences. It’s of the upmost importance that our patients feel comfortable and secure at Our Chiro Brisbane.

We utilise many different types of Chiropractic techniques so that we may offer a wide variety of treatment styles to accommodate all people.

How long will it take?

The length of treatment varies from case to case. Some patients may have a simple acute injury which will heal in relatively short period of time whilst others with chronic or long term problems may require more treatment.

Our Chiropractors will advise you on the recommended treatment schedule based on the nature of your injury, how long you have had the problem for, your age and general health. Reassessments will occur regularly to ensure that the expected improvements are made and that you are on track with your progress. Our Chiropractors will give their professional advice based on their knowledge and experience, so that you can make an informed decision.

Many patients choose to continue regular wellness care beyond the initial recovery, as part of a healthy lifestyle. Regular chiropractic treatment helps the body function at an optimum level and can prevent injury. Much like brushing your teeth and dental checkups help to prevent tooth decay. If you simply just want to get out of pain, or if you want to continue maintenance care periodically, it’s your choice.

Many of our patients say that with chiropractic they experience a greater feeling of wellbeing, more energy and stamina to keep up with their busy lives, work, family and play.

How effective is chiropractic treatment?

International studies show that Chiropractic care is by far the most effective and economical treatment for musculoskeletal issues above all other standard medical treatments (1999 the biggest independent report into chiropractic, commissioned by the Canadian Government).

In Scandinavia and other countries, chiropractic has been integrated into the health system for years, where the chiropractors are much like a medical doctor for the spine and musculoskeletal system.

Is Chiropractic covered by Healthfunds or Medicare?

Yes – at the Clinic you can claim on the spot via our Healthfund portal. Check directly with your health fund regarding the amount they will cover as all Healthfunds vary depending on level of cover.

If you have a complex condition and a referral from your GP or medical specialist – up to 5 chiropractic treatments per calendar year can be covered under Medicare.  Again we can process this claim on the spot at the clinic.
