Numbness and tingling sensations are conditions that can affect people of all ages, for a variety of different reasons.

What causes numbness and tingling?

Most of us have experienced a tingling or ‘pins and needles’ sensation before, such as when our foot falls “asleep” from crossing our legs or sitting on one of our feet. This will resolve after a minute or so when we stand up and move.

However, these sensations may be an indication of a condition in the nervous system that needs to be addressed by a chiropractor.

Numbness or tingling may result from underlying nerve compression or irritation of the nerve roots as they exit the spine. This is something we often see and help treat at Our Chiro Chiropractor Brisbane.

These conditions can include herniated disc, nerve trauma, inflammation, tight muscles, and osteoarthritis. If is stems from a biomechanical cause, it will respond well to chiropractic and physical therapy treatment.

Which treatments help lessen the symptoms?

Treatments include adjustments and mobilizations, dry needling, Kinesiology and rigid taping, cold laser and exercise programs.

If you have ongoing numbness and tingling or it happens regularly, it should be checked by a health professional to make sure there are no underlying health conditions.

Other causes of numbness and tingling can be caused by nerve irritation, pathology in other parts of the body, or blood flow being restricted to the affected area. These causes can be from a variety of medical reasons such as vascular claudication (restricted blood flow), multiple sclerosis, tumors, toxins or vitamin deficiencies.
