What are possible leg pain causes?

Overuse injury

Overuse of the leg muscles is one of the most common of all leg pain causes. At Our Chiro Brisbane, we
often see this in patients who are active and play sports. Overuse causes muscle fatigue, which in turn
can cause leg pain, muscle cramps, and/or muscle spasms. If you are experiencing any of these
symptoms, please contact us to book an appointment.

Sciatica (also known as sciatic neuritis)

Sciatica refers to pain that follows the path of your sciatic nerve. The pain starts in your spine in your
lower back and radiates down the back of one leg. Although sciatica usually only affects one side of the
body, it is possible that you will experience pain running down both legs. It is usually caused by a
herniated disc or spinal bone spur pressing down on the sciatic nerve.

Compartment syndrome

The symptoms of compartment syndrome can include severe pain, a 'pins and needles' sensation, and weakness in the affected area. This is either caused by swelling of the tissue, or internal bleeding. Either of these builds up pressure, causing severe pain. This is a potentially dangerous condition and is one that needs to be treated in hospital.

Diabetic neuropathy (also known as diabetic nerve damage)

Another one of the leg pain causes that we see at Our Chiro Brisbane is diabetic neuropathy. As the
name suggests, it is a type of nerve damage that is sometimes experienced by people living with
diabetes. It develops over time from chronic high blood sugar levels and high levels of fat in your
bloodstream.

Patients typically experience pain or numbness in their legs. Other symptoms can include:
oversensitivity in the affected area, reduced sense of touch, uncomfortable tingling or burning, or a “pins
and needles” sensation.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS)

If you have an almost irresistible urge to move your legs, especially in the evenings, then you might be
suffering from restless legs syndrome (RLS). It is a neurological sensorimotor disorder that can include
pain in the legs as well as a tingling or burning sensation. Patients usually experience this when sitting or
lying down in the evening or at night. It often gets worse as you age, and can disrupt your sleep.

How do you treat leg pain?

We will need to diagnose the causes of leg pain in order to develop an effective treatment plan. Our
Chiro Brisbane offers a wide range of physical therapies that we use to successfully alleviate leg pain.

When appropriate, we also work with a wide network of healthcare providers in various fields. Some
patients will require medication such as an anti inflammatory in addition to physical therapy. We
collaborate with healthcare providers in our network to ensure that all our patients receive the best
possible care.

Our Chiro Brisbane provides each patient with a tailored treatment.

Once we have determined the causes of leg pain you are experiencing, we will develop a tailored
treatment plan based on your individual case. No two patients are identical, and so we adjust our
treatments accordingly to ensure the best possible outcomes. With a wide range of treatments at our
disposal, we select and adjust them to provide you with the best possible outcome.
